After receiving a phone call early this Spring from Mr.Rickey of Hunts Bowhunting Ranch, I had finally come to the realization that my search for a giant, pure bred mouflon was coming closer than ever to a dramatic end.
I scheduled my trip to the ranch in DeKalb, Texas, the week of Thanksgiving (the only time I could get away from my archery pro-shop). Upon hearing the news that I was coming to Texas, my relatives were gracious enough to house me for a few days before my hunt. After arriving at the ranch two days later, my daughter and I were greeted by Mr.Rickey and his two sons, Eli and Zach. I knew from that moment that I was in good hands. After settling into the bunk house, Mr.Rickey asked me if I would like to hunt the remainder of that day. After a quick check of my bow, we were off in the truck to get familiar with the ranch and also to see if we could spot the huge mouflon that we talked about on the phone and was said to call the ranch home.
We did get a quick glimpse of him the first afternoon and decided to try a ground blind set to see if we could intercept him that evening. As darkness fell, “the” mouflon, the one we were specifically after, was unfortunately a ‘no show’.
The next morning we had the same game plan: set up in a ground blind, overlooking a green patch, in hopes that he would come in and graze at first light. Time went on in the morning’s hunt with no sign of the big ram. At 9:30am my daughter turned to me and said, “Dad, he didn’t show for his appointment. You better call Mr. Rickey and ty to change tactics.”
I made a quick call and our host came to the blind to see what my plan was going to be. I suggested a spot and stalk hunt. After a few friendly chuckles he explained to me that this would be one of the most difficult things to attempt on a true wild sheep. I assured him that if we could get within 100 yards I could make the shot. (more…)
Terry Richey, of New Haven, Connecticut, recounts and shares a successful hunting trip to Mark Luce’s Hindsite Hunting Preserve.

It was before sun up on Sunday morning, while almost everyone else was snuggled up in their nice warm beds dreaming of monster bucks. My brother Travis and I were finishing loading up the truck to head up North to Newport, Maine for a 3 day hunt at Hindsite Hunting Preserve with outfitter Mark Rocky Luce. We learned a few important lessons on this trip. First off, when a moose and a police cruiser meet on Route 95 there is no winner. The cow moose had expired on the side of the road and the cruiser…well, lets just say it was NOT gonna be chasing anymore early morning speeders on that day. The officer walked away without so much as a coffee stain on his uniform, so that was a good thing. We also learned that (more…)
Congratulations to AAE’s very own Craig Ellwanger on his article recently published in the latest volume of The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters magazine! In the 3-page featured article, Craig recounts his weekend at the Diamond TF Hunting Ranch in Sonora last fall when he harvested his first axis deer with a bow and biggest axis to date. The story actually making the magazine came as a bit of a surprise to its writer.
“It has long been a goal of mine to have one of my stories featured…ever since I picked up my first TTHA magazine as a teenager”, Craig says. “I was actually pretty shocked that my story was in there. I sent in the story almost 8 months ago and just assumed it hit the ‘no thanks’ pile with the others. I mention in the story that harvesting a trophy axis with a bow was a thrilling feeling, but this has to be up there as well.”
You can find “Coming Up Aces with Axis” on page 148 of the Sept/Oct edition of “The Journal”. If you do not subscribe to The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters or have access to a copy, you can read the original full story here:
“Coming Up Aces with Axis”
by Craig Ellwanger, AAE
There are hundreds and hundreds of hunting stories where everything just seems to come together perfectly (just watch the last 10 minutes of most hunting shows). The perfect stand, the perfect wind, the perfect time of year, and then the perfect deer walks out…BOOM. Story’s over. Yet, for most of us, events seldom transpire this way.
Hours, days, and even seasons worth of seemingly “perfect” set-ups may go by without the epic crescendo of a successful harvest. Our hunt in Sonora, Texas on the Diamond TF Ranch this past weekend was one of the best few days of my short bowhunting career, but it definitely did not start out nor appear as though it was headed that way.
