Trip Barber's 172" DDO Whitetail
There are many reasons why subscribers, and hunters in general, pick up and flip through the pages of the Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters magazine each month. Some like finding out the latest hunting news, seeing the newest gadgets or reading the informative articles on hunting in this country. Most readers, however, will tell you that the feature they really enjoy about the magazine are the hunting stories submitted my actual hunters about their exciting adventures afield. It’s not too often that, while thumbing through these articles, you come across a familiar name or picture and think to yourself “Hey, I know them!”
That, however, was exactly the case in a recent article in the ‘Spotlight on Texas Trophy Hunters’ section of the Sept/Oct 2011 edition of “The Journal”. There, below a story entitled “That’s What You Come to South Texas For”, was the name of a familiar author – Wes Mundy.
Wes is the owner/operator of Double Diamond Outfitters. His outfit offers some of the finest hunting around for whitetails, pronghorn, elk, mulies, turkeys & exotics…all over the lonestar state & Mexico. A great hunting guide, and even better guy, Wes and his outfitting service were the very first outfitter to join our Exotic Hunting Directory back in 2009! Getting to know Wes since has been a true pleasure. He often lets us know what’s new in his world, keeps us up-to-date on new ranches he’s aquired the rights to hunt and share with us pictures of his hunter’s successes. We remember seeing the amazing 172″ S. Texas whitetail in pics, post hunt!
Below is the story of the hunt for this incredible buck, through the eyes of the person aiding in making it all happen. You can also find the story in the latest TTHA magazine, on newsstands now. Now That’s What You Come To South Texas For [Full Story]
by Wes Mundy, Double Diamond Outfitters
Like most hunters across South Texas, I anxiously awaited the start of the 2010-2011 whitetail season. With record rainfall starting at the end of 2009 and continuing into the summer of 2010, range conditions couldn’t have been better for antler growth. It was going to be an awesome season and (more…)
“My 1st Axis!!”
by Wes Mundy (Double Diamond Outfitters)
For as long as I can remember I dreamed of making a living in the outdoor/hunting industry and 6 years ago I decided to chase my dream and started Double Diamond Outfitters. It’s been a great 6 years and I’ve had the privilege to hunt with great people and kill some great animals, but unfortunately my own personal hunting has been greatly reduced. So I never pass up a chance when I get the opportunity to hunt for myself and kill whatever animal/trophy I choose.
A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to hunt axis deer. I was really excited because I’ve never killed an axis buck. I’ve shot a lot of axis does, and passed on some great axis bucks, (yes I’m still kicking myself over several of them) so hopefully this time I would finally get my 1st axis buck.
Since I was hunting 15-20 minutes from my house, just outside of Boerne, I decided to concentrate on afternoon hunts when the temperature would continually be dropping. We had been seeing some pretty nice axis at specific feeders, so each afternoon I would concentrate on those feeders, stalking and still hunting, looking for the bigger axis that were on my “hit list.” (more…)
Still searching for that trophy hunt of a lifetime?! You’re time is now!
If you’re like us, a trophy bighorn ram is at the top of the list for all-time hunting goals to one day topple. Well, you’re wait to harvest a World-Class Bighorn may just have come to an end…but act fast, because time is limited to take advantage of a last minute deal on your hunt of a lifetime!!
Double Diamond Outfitters has one Desert Sheep permit still available for the 2011 sheep season in Mexico. The season is supposed to stop at the end of this month, but they got a 10-day extension with this permit giving you until April 10, 2010 (like we said, no time to waste here). Double Diamond scouts just pinpointed two rams this past weekend that both will score 165″+ B&C!
The hunt will take place on a 8,500 acre ranch in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and is a ‘no kill, no pay’ hunt. If you are unsuccessful harvesting your trophy ram, there will be only a nominal fee to cover expenses like gas, food & guide fees during the hunt. They can’t stress enough that this is a safe & secure area of Mexico, more than 3 hours from the U.S./Mexico border. Camping near the mountains that you will be hunting, this hunt will be challenging, but the success…that much sweeter and the experience one you will never forget!
The ranch owner has graciously discounted the price of this permit to only $30,000! (That’s almost 50% of the normal cost to take a sheep of this caliber!) Get in touch with DDO immediately if you, or anyone you know, is interested and please help spread the word. One lucky hunter will have a chance at fulfilling a lifelong dream in the next 2 weeks!
For more information about the hunt, contact Wes Mundy of Double Diamond Outfitters @ 210.602.3118 or email them directly from their AAE Outfitter Page.
