AAE Blackbuck Hunt at Porter’s Exotics

The author w/ his blackbuck doe taken last week

by Craig Ellwanger, AAE Prostaff

Success!! After a failed attempt on mission #1 and after a torturous wait for a clear shot on mission #2, I was finally able to get an arrow in a beautiful blackbuck doe at 22 yards last week at Porter’s Exotic Ranch near Flynn, Texas.

These little critters are beyond “finicky” when it comes to standing still. Once she finally gave me a clear broadside shot I seized the opportunity. Placing my 20-pin just her shoulder, I heard the “thwack” and felt good about my shot. She hauled off like her tail was on fire and I watched in amazement as she disappeared behind the treeline approximately 100 yards away…all the while thinking, “surely I didn’t miss?!”

After waiting a few minutes for everything to calm down (including myself), I got down from the tree to retrieve my arrow.  Finding good, red blood on my arrow my nerves were settled, but to my dismay, there was ZERO blood to follow. I searched, scoured and traced the “path” to no avail as light gave way to dark.  I waited for my guide CP to come and assist. Aided by a spotlight, we followed the path I had seen her run…nothing to be found.

We went back to camp to call upon the services of “Jack” the wonder dog. Jack is a stocky, white Jack Russell with an adventurous spirit. This, I was told, was not his first “rodeo”.  I’ll admit I was a tad bit skeptical that without anything to go on but a bloody arrow and a fleeing path,  (more…)

The Hunt for the Infamous ‘Caudal Monster’

The author w/ the axis known as the "caudal monster"

by Theresa Osorio

I shot my first deer on Saturday, 12 November 2011.  For you long time hunters,  I know you remember the excitement of your first deer, likely taken in your youth.  At 48 years old, I assure you it feels just as thrilling!  I was privileged to be able to hunt at Porter’s Exotics near Flynn, Texas.  Carroll Porter and his guide CP Wade were instrumental in helping me prepare for this new hunting experience.  In addition, my boyfriend, Jeff, assisted me in using his Remington M24 Rifle with Leopold scope chambered in .308, with a 165 grain Federal Fusion bullet.  This is weapon that I had not fired before, although I was familiar with rifles from my service as an officer in the Army.

Jeff and I went to a ground blind on Saturday afternoon.  It was a beautiful day – warm with a nice light breeze.  After an hour, enjoying the quite calm of nature, we spotted some Fallow and Blackbuck.  These animals are beautiful in their own right, but my heart was set on getting an Axis deer.  After another 30 minutes Jeff noticed an Axis buck in the distance on our right side.  We waited to see if the rest of his group would follow but he was alone, which Jeff said was odd.  Just as he made that comment a group of Axis filtered in at a trot and a run, coming from behind and to the left of the blind.  These creatures are gorgeous but skittish so we remained very quiet.  Then, I saw my Axis deer I was wanting, the one with the caudal tines longer than his main beams.  (more…)

DJ Calls “Sika Deer Call R-25″ – Field Test #1

DJ Calls Sika Deer Callby Craig Ellwanger, AAE Crew

About a month ago, while scouring the internet for exciting exotic hunting-related videos on YouTube, I happened across an intriguing video of a guy instructing you on how to use this certain model of a sika deer call.  The video linked me to the website for a company called DJ Illinois River Valley Deer Calls, where (wouldn’t you know) they sell sika deer calls.  “Sold!”

If you’ve ever looked for an exotic deer call like axis or fallow, you know that they basically do not exist in today’s market  (1 million different whitetail calls, virtually zero “other” deer calls….sad, really).  Call manufacturers simply do not make them!  So, when I found this call,  it was a “no brainer” purchase.  The idea would be to field test for you guys, the exotic hunting enthusiast, and give our honest assessment and feedback.

Arriving a few days later, we were stoked to rip into the thing and go crazy, but to my dismay (and honestly assessing myself a novice “sika caller”), the package had no instructions, pointers or tips as to how to get the right sound of out of it.  This wasn’t good…for me.  I had already scheduled a trip to Porter’s Exotics with Ranch Manager CP Wade that same week to commence our first field test.  All I had to go by practicing with this thing was the audio of the original YouTube video and somehow hope to be able to mimic that sound in the woods with real, live sika hanging around.

Even after 3 or 4 days of “playing” with the call around the office, at my house, in my truck, etc. I could not manage to create a sound that (to ME) sounded like anything other than a duck or dying rabbit…(<— a bad sign)!  With only a day or so before our scheduled “test” (more…)
