(En)dangerous News for 3 Exotic Species

oryx_ed-1In July 2009, a Federal judge ruled that 3 U.S. exotic species – the scimitar-horned oryx, dama gazelle, and addax antelope – will no longer be exempt from listing on the endangered species list.  An exemption that was adopted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWD) in September 2005, allowing the breeding and free trade of these animals among ranches and ranchers in the U.S.  Though nearly extinct in their native habitats (where these unique animals are seen have little to no value to the culture), their transplantation to the states has been a resounding success.  Aside from thousands of jobs, revenues generated from exotic breeding and selling tops $1 billion.  Perhaps most important of all – through the efforts of organizations like the Exotic Wildlife Association (EWA), Safari Club International (SCI), and the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance (ADWA), many critically endangered species have been a part of major reintroduction programs to “restock” native lands from U.S. herds.

Economy Affects the Hunting Industry

blesbokhunterDue to cut-backs, lay-offs, and downsizing (to name a few) millions of Americans are feeling the grip of a slowed economy (I refuse to use the word “recession”).  As a result, luxuries and other aspects of our lives that we often take for granted are being looked at in a far different way this past year and going forward.   One industry that is not immune to the slowed spending of America is the hunting industry…
